The Upholstery for Beginners classes are perfect if you want to learn the core upholstery skills needed to give a new lease of life to a footstool, chair or small ottoman. A small class of no more than six people guarantees you plenty of expert tuition and support from your tutor Ania or Clare and the other students.
Beginners. This course is perfect for people new to upholstery.
This course teaches you the basics of modern upholstery including:
Stripping down the chair
Application of foam / webbing
Applying your fabric
Bring along your first upholstery project! It could be a simple chair, drop in seat, footstool or ottoman. You can always send us a photo of your project to check it’s suitable:
It should be in good repair (e.g. the seat of the chair needs reupholstering but no other repairs)
You should be able to carry it up to the first floor of The Sewing Shed (unfortunately at this time we are unable to store projects in between classes).
Your chosen fabric, a tape measure and a pair of fabric scissors. Face covering (mask) and eye protection ie safety glasses and or a visor if you do not wear glasses.
Upholstery tools including access to pneumatic staple guns
One Janome sewing machine for each student
You can buy upholstery supplies in the class.
