About The Sewing Shed

The Sewing Shed is the perfect blend of bright and modern interiors with a beautiful heritage feel creating the perfect place for learning to sew and craft. In 2017 we moved from our original premises – a posh shed in my back garden – to the north chapel, giving us more space to accommodate the growing number of classes and students. We asked an award-winning designer to design and refurbish the interior and we commissioned bespoke furniture and equipment to make the learning experience as comfortable as possible. We have just welcomed a whole new fleet of Sewing Machines new for January 2024!

And the chapel is so tranquil! All you can hear above the whir of machines and chatter of students is birdsong. You’ll love coming here to be part of a small friendly group of fellow crafters. It really is the perfect setting in the idyllic West Yorkshire spa town of Ilkley.

The Sewing Shed is well equipped and as a student you’ll enjoy:

the use of your own brand-new fully computerised Janome sewing machine, plus access to overlockers

plenty of counter space – enough for each student to work comfortably

a flood of natural light form huge skylights and feature window, plus a sophisticated lighting scheme

large bespoke tables for cutting-out and assembling dressmaking, Roman blinds & curtains, or patchwork quilts

ergonomic and super comfy chairs

plenty of free parking at the door

Stock on hand in the studio

We keep a small range of fabrics and haberdashery in the studio, stocked with seasonal fabrics, threads, zips, interfacing, bias binding, tape measures, seam rippers, pins and pattern paper.

"Thank you for your expert guidance and endless enthusiasm"

"Just want to say thank you so much for your continued help, support and patience over the last year whilst I have learned to sew. I'm amazed at how much I have developed with your close guidance and teaching expertise, from my first cushion, to a king size patchwork quilt!!! Some other successful projects include a kimono jacket, bunting and cushions made for my sons classroom from old duvet covers, numerous clothing alterations, bags, purses and much more....I truly love The Sewing Shed and just wish I could come every day...
